We are pleased to announce that the Conference dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the day of death of J.Puzyna organized by Ivan Franko National University of Lviv
will be held on 22 - 23 March, 2019 in Lviv.

The first conference day (Friday, 22.03.2019) will be devoted to the talks on history of mathematics: about Jozef Puzyna, his scientific research, his pupils. Also, the excursion to the Lychakiv cemetery "Józef Puzyna's teachers, pupils and colleagues" will be organized.

On the second conference day (Saturday, 23.03.2019) participants of the conference will visit town Stryj, the Józef Puzyna's grave at the Stryj cemetery and village Stankiv (where J.Puzyna lived).

Józef Puzyna (1856 - 1919)

Józef Puzyna is recognized as a precursor of mathematical ideas, which were developed by the next generation mathematicians. The organization of mathematical seminar and the invitations of professors to Lviv was the base of foundation of the Lviv (Lwów) School of Mathematics. It is difficult to overestimate his influence on the formation of both Polish and Ukrainian mathematical schools.

Józef Puzyna was born on 19 March, 1856 in Nowy Martynów. He studied at the Lviv University in 1875 - 1882 as W. Żmurko's student, and at the University of Berlin as K. Weierstrass' student, finished the doctorate degree in 1883 and obtained his habilitation degree in 1885 in Lviv and taught mathematics at the Lviv university. He was a very good lecturer and lectured on many branches of mathematics. He also held positions of responsibility at the university: he was the rector in 1904/5 academic year, and vice-rector in 1905/6, Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy in 1894 - 1895.

He was the author of twenty-two works. One of Puzyna's main achievements was his monograph The theory of analytic functions.

Puzyna died on 31 March, 1919 in Stanków and was graved in Stryj.
