(April 12, 1837 Strzyzów near Rzeszów – October 7, 1898)

He studied mathematics and physics at the Jagiellonian University, and later at the universities of Göttingen, Berlin and Vienna.
From 1872 he was professor and head of the Department of Mathematics at the Technical Academy in Lviv, where he worked until the end of his life. He was elected rector twice — in 1878–1879 and 1885–1886.
A versatile mathematician, his main areas of research were differential equations, analytical geometry and mathematical methods of physics. He published more than 50 works, including a 904-page monograph "Wykład nauki o równaniach różniczkowych" (Paris, 1877) — the first monograph on differential equations written in Polish. From 1872 he was a corresponding member, and from 1891 a full member of the Kraków Academy of Sciences. He died in Lviv on 7 October 1898.
