Founder of the modern Lviv topological school, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics. In 1972, he entered the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Lviv University, graduating in 1977. In the same year, he entered the postgraduate course of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University, working under the supervision of Professor O. Arhangel'skii. In 1981, he defended his PhD thesis and returned to Lviv as an Associate Professor at the Department of Geometry and Topology.
In 1982 he founded the seminar "Topology and Applications", around which the modern Lviv topological school emerged and gained international recognition.
From 2004 he served as Vice-Dean, from 2016 as Acting Dean, and from 2019 as Dean of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.
Research interests: topological algebra (in particular, the theory of topological groups) and the history of mathematics. He introduced the class of ω-bounded topological groups, known in the literature as "Guran groups".
