Melnyk Zinoviy

(February 10, 1935, village of Radenychi, Mostyska district, Lviv region — 1983, Lviv)
Dean of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Ivan Franko Lviv University in 1974–1980.
He studied at Radenychi seven-year school, then completed grades 8–10 at Mostyska secondary school. In 1951 he enrolled at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Ivan Franko Lviv State University. In 1956 he became a postgraduate student at the Department of Differential Equations, under the supervision of the department head, Professor Yaroslav-Yuriy Borysovych Lopatinskyi.
He defended his candidate dissertation "Mixed Problems for Certain Hyperbolic Equations and Systems" in 1963.
In 1966 Z. Melnyk was seconded for 2 years to the Republic of Guinea for teaching work at the Guinean Polytechnic Institute. From September 1969 he was seconded to the Republic of Tunisia. At the University of Tunisia (October 1969 – September 1970) he taught a special course "Theory of Lie Groups and Its Applications to Differential Equations" and a course "Differential Calculus in Vector Normed Spaces", for which he wrote a lecture course and problem book. At the Tunisian National Engineering Institute (September 1970 – August 1972) he taught a "Mathematics Course" based on the lecture notes and problem book published there.
From June 16, 1974, Zinoviy Ostapovych served as dean of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics. On September 28, 1979 he became head of the Department of Differential Equations, a position he held until the last days of his life.
