Kovanko Oleksandr

( (July 18 (6), 1893, Kostiantynohrad, Poltava Governorate, now Berestyn, Kharkiv Region – May 20, 1975, Lviv)
After graduating from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at Moscow University, he pursued postgraduate studies there. Between 1926 and 1945, he worked at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, Crimean University, and various higher education institutions in Azerbaijan and Russia. In 1936, he defended his Doctor of Sciences (DSc) dissertation.
He was the first mathematician to arrive in Lviv after World War II. From 1945 to 1973, he worked at Lviv University, where he headed the Department of Theory of Functions, the Department of Mathematical Analysis and Theory of Functions, and the Department of Mathematical Analysis. In 1947–1949, he served as the Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics. In 1945–1947, he was also a Professor at the Department of Higher Mathematics at Lviv Polytechnic Institute.
He initiated mathematical olympiads for high school students in Lviv.
Research interests: theory of almost periodic functions, theory of surface squarability, theory of functional sequences.
