(May 25, 1928, Samostrily, now Korets District, Rivne Obl. – May 28, 1990, Lviv)
An outstanding scientist in the field of theoretical mechanics, pioneer of theoretical modelling in the mechanics of deformable media. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, Head of the Western Scientific Center of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, founder and Director of the Institute for Applied Problems of Mechanics and Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. In 1946–1951, he studied at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Ivan Franko State University of Lviv. In 1954, he completed his postgraduate studies at the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Automation of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR under the supervision of Academician H. M. Savin. He worked at the Physico-Mechanical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, where he established the Mathematical Sector, and later, the Branch of Mathematical Physics of the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In 1978, he spearheaded the establishment of the Institute for Applied Problems of Mechanics and Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (which now bears his name), serving as its Director until his passing. For over 25 years, he taught at Lviv University, where he founded and headed the Department of Mathematical Modeling of Physico-Mechanical Processes. He supervised over 50 PhD and DSc candidates.
